Do you consider yourself "technical?"
Can you navigate spreadsheets, edit photos, troubleshoot your computer, figure out new apps, or somehow get the TV working after someone else has pushed the wrong button?
I enjoy that kind of stuff. I don't know everything, but I've reached the point where most technology doesn't intimidate me anymore. If I don't know the answer, I usually assume I can figure it out.
My wife, on the other hand, is one of the most joyful, grateful people you'll ever meet. She has an incredible ability to see the good in people and bring it to the surface. She leaves almost everyone she meets feeling encouraged.
But if she has one kryptonite...
It's technology.
Computers.
Apps.
Software.
The television.
Pretty much anything with a password.
Now, to her credit, she has grown tremendously. Every once in a while she'll solve a problem that completely surprises me. But there are still moments when she'll hit a wall before she's even begun.
She'll look at the screen, sigh, and call for help.
My response is almost always the same.
"Just try. Just start. If you get stuck, I'll jump in."
Something happened recently that caused me to hear my own words in a completely different way.
As I drove to my favorite coffee shop, it hit me.
The technology she struggles with is behind my learning curve. I've already fought those battles.
But what about the things I'm facing today?
Building a business means learning cameras, lighting, microphones, video editing, sound, AI, websites, email marketing, podcasts, social media... and a hundred other things I never imagined needing to know.
Suddenly, I wasn't the expert anymore.
I was the beginner.
And I felt exactly what she feels.
Then I thought about Boomer Esiason and Troy Aikman. Both struggled mightily when they first entered the NFL. Aikman started his career 0-11 as the Cowboys' quarterback. Dallas finished 1-15. Imagine the headlines. Imagine social media. "Bust." "Wrong guy." "He'll never make it." He went on to win 3 Super Bowls with them.
Good thing he didn't listen.
He kept showing up.
He kept taking the next snap.
This past week I watched my granddaughter do the same thing on the beach. She'd run...fall...laugh...stand up...get knocked over by a wave...get back up...dig a hole...fill it in...dump the bucket...start all over again. Never once did she think failure meant she should quit.
Children understand something adults often forget.
Growth belongs to those willing to begin again.
Maybe that's why so many dreams never leave the shelf. We call it preparation, but often it's fear wearing a better outfit. Fear of failure. Fear of looking foolish. Fear of being judged.
So here's the framework I'm reminding myself to live by:
S — Stop waiting, comparing, and making excuses.
T — Take one small step, one risk, one action.
A — Attitude determines altitude. Choose courage over comfort.
R — Remember why you started—and remember God hasn't left your side.
T — Today. Not someday. Today.
So let me ask you...
Where do you need to S.T.A.R.T.?
Is it your faith?
Your marriage?
Your health?
That business idea?
That ministry?
That conversation you've been avoiding?
Whatever it is, don't spend another year standing behind the starting line.
You don't have to know everything.
You just have to take the first step.
