Retirement? Wait… What???
I have my 40th high school reunion coming up in less than a month.
WHAT???
I remember my parents talking about their 40th reunion! How, what, where, WHEN did that happen to me?
If I still had my hair, I'd really be scratching my head wondering where the time went!
Actually, I'm really looking forward to it. I love catching up with old friends. I find myself thinking about all the questions I want to ask. Where has life taken them? What have they experienced? What surprises has life thrown their way?
Sometimes I just sit back in awe of how quickly the years have passed.
I mean, I remember turning 40.
Wasn't that for OLD people?
And today is my birthday! I'm 59 years old! How about that?!
Which brings me to another word I've been thinking a lot about lately.
Retirement.
Wait a minute. How am I suddenly talking about 65 like it's right around the corner?
Someone wake me up!
I'm not sure I'm connected to that reality just yet!
But it does make you think about your life.
Wait… how did I get here?
And perhaps an even bigger question:
Where am I going from here?
When you think about retirement, what comes to mind?
Freedom? Travel? Grandkids? Golf? No more alarm clocks?
Or maybe uncertainty? Boredom? Getting older? Wondering what you'll do with all that time?
Here's something I've been wondering lately.
We spend decades preparing financially for retirement. But how much time do we spend thinking about the life we actually want to experience?
That brings me to something we all understand.
CONNECTION.
Think about your cell phone. You've got five bars, a strong signal, and everything is working beautifully. Calls are clear. Messages go through. You're connected!
Then you drive a few miles down the road, and suddenly you're down to one bar. Or worse, NO SERVICE!
Same phone. Same network. But somewhere along the way, you lost your connection.
I wonder how often that happens in our lives without us even realizing it.
There may have been a time when we felt deeply connected to our spouse, our children, our friends, our faith, or even our own dreams.
Then life happened.
Work. Responsibilities. Raising kids. Paying bills. Getting older.
And somewhere along the way, those five bars became three. Then two. Maybe even one.
And sometimes we don't realize how weak the connection has become until we really need it.
That's something I've been thinking about a lot lately.
What if we became more proactive about staying connected—or getting connected for the very first time—to what really matters at this stage of life?
Our relationships. Our health. Our faith. Our passions. Our sense of purpose. Opportunities to serve and make a difference.
And what about connections we haven't even made yet? Possibilities we haven't explored? People we haven't met? Dreams we haven't considered?
I'm not suggesting I have all the answers. Far from it!
But I'm becoming increasingly curious about what makes the next chapter of life truly meaningful.
What if our best years aren't necessarily behind us? What if some of our most meaningful connections and experiences are still waiting to happen?
I'd love your thoughts.
What excites you about retirement? What concerns you? And how connected do you feel to the life you really want to live?
I'm also looking for a few people approaching or already experiencing retirement who'd enjoy an informal conversation about this.
No sales pitch. Just a chance to explore some questions together.
After all, we can't slow down the clock. But we can do something about the strength of our connections—and the life we're creating with the time ahead.
