progress: your superpower

progress: your superpower

Small but mighty. Why moving forward can change everything.

Maybe you remember me mentioning that I lost a 100-year-old oak tree in the storm in early July.

I LOVED that tree.

It was enormous. Magnificent. Irreplaceable.

Honestly, I've kind of mourned its loss. Every time I look at where it once stood, I'm reminded of what's gone.

Then today, something caught my eye.

A tiny green seedling pushing through the soil nearby.

I was PUMPED!

Look at that! Something is GROWING!

It's tiny. Vulnerable. Not even an oak.

But I'm going to water it, protect it, nurture it, and enjoy watching it grow!

Would I rather have my oak back? ABSOLUTELY.

But that's not happening.

And suddenly, this little seedling gave me something new to look forward to.

It reminded me of a powerful truth about life.

The best is DONE. WON. ACHIEVED.

But the next best thing?

PROGRESS!

And I believe progress is one of the most underestimated superpowers we possess.

Why?

Because we're obsessed with results. The finish line. The victory. The accomplishment.

We celebrate what's been achieved while overlooking the extraordinary power of what's still growing.

Research on motivation, confidence, and emotional well-being points to something remarkable: meaningful progress, even in small doses, can lift our spirits, strengthen our belief in ourselves, and give us the motivation to keep going. Sometimes, taking action is precisely what helps us begin feeling better.

Progress doesn't just change our circumstances. It can change US!

But here's where we get into trouble.

ALL OR NOTHING.

I get it. I'm wired that way myself.

If I can't do the entire workout, why bother? If I can't make a massive change, what's the point? If I can't achieve the outcome I'm dreaming about, why even start?

But think about this:

Sometimes, our obsession with ALL leaves us with NOTHING.

No workout. No phone call. No new relationship. No attempt. No progress.

And the longer we stay there, the more discouraged we can become.

We stop trying because we feel stuck. Then we feel even more stuck because we've stopped trying.

What a terrible cycle!

What if, instead of demanding ALL, we simply prioritized SOME?

Some movement. Some connection. Some growth.

Some PROGRESS!

So how do we activate this superpower?

FIRST: JUST GO!

Get through the gym door. Get on the bike and pedal. Swim one lap. Take the walk. Make the call. Connect with a friend. Pray.

Don't bite off more than you can chew. But get close!

SECOND: NURTURE YOUR PROGRESS.

Protect it. Feed it. Celebrate it.

Remove obstacles. Find encouragement. Adjust when necessary.

Don't crush today's tiny victory by comparing it to yesterday's accomplishments.

I still miss my oak. A LOT.

But today, I'm celebrating something new.

And tomorrow?

I'm going to check on that little seedling again!

Because progress may not replace what we've lost, but it can give us something meaningful to invest in, something to anticipate, and another reason to look forward to tomorrow.

Progress is small but MIGHTY!

Let me ask you:

Where are you making progress?

Where have you stopped?

What's standing in your way?

And what ONE thing could you do TODAY to get moving again?

Don't let your pursuit of ALL keep you from experiencing SOME.

Activate your superpower. Prioritize PROGRESS!
