Just. Show. Up.

Just. Show. Up.
Yesterday was one of those days.
Massive jet lag.
Body aching.
Energy low.
I had just gotten home and stood there debating with myself:
Nap… or work out?
You already know how that conversation goes.
The couch looked inviting.
My body felt heavy.
My mind had a thousand reasons why today would be a great day to rest.
But then that quiet voice came back — the one that has guided me for years:
Just. Show. Up.
So I dragged myself to the YMCA.
Not excited.
Not energized.
Not feeling like an athlete.
Just a guy nearing 60 trying to keep a promise to himself.
My dad was a man of very few words. He didn’t give long speeches about life. But he did pass down a few simple truths that stuck with me.
One of them was this:
“Showing up consistently is half of what it takes to be successful.”
Yesterday I lived that out again.
I didn’t go crazy at the gym. I didn’t break records. But I moved. I stretched. I worked out the kinks from traveling.
And something interesting happened.
A small spark lit.
Today? Much less jet lag.
My body felt better.
And this time I wanted to go.
The hardest part had already been done yesterday.
That one simple act of showing up had greased the gears.
One gear starts turning…
Then another…
Then another.
Momentum begins to build.
What felt impossible yesterday starts to feel normal today.
And now I’ve made another small deposit into the sea of workouts I’ll need before my race in July.
That’s how progress works.
Similar to my dad, Woody Allen raised the percentage:
“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”
I believe that more and more the older I get.
Because as I approach 60, I’m also increasingly aware of something else.
So many people around me are dealing with injuries.
Health challenges.
Limitations they didn’t expect.
It’s a sobering reminder.
If you can move today… move.
If you can breathe deeply today… breathe.
If you can walk, lift, stretch, work, love, and serve… do it.
Don’t delay.
Another mindset that helps me is something I’ve talked about before:
“I get to…”
Not I have to.
I get to work out.
I get to be married.
I get to have a home to clean.
I get to go to work.
I get to breathe the crisp morning air.
Gratitude changes everything.
When you combine “I get to” with “Just show up,” something powerful happens.
The resistance starts to melt.
As Jim Rohn said:
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
Showing up builds that habit.
And here’s the beautiful part.
You may walk in discouraged…
But you almost always walk out encouraged.
You may start the day frustrated…
But after you show up and get moving, your entire emotional landscape can shift.
So let me ask you:
Where in your life do you need to show up right now?
Your health?
Your marriage?
Your work?
Your parenting?
Your calling?
When you’re tempted to stay in bed — get up.
When you’re tempted to cancel — go.
When you’re tempted to avoid it — begin.
Trust the process.
Trust that the emotions will shift once you start moving.
Challenge for today:
Pick one area where you’ve been hesitating… and just show up.
And if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start…
Show up for a discovery call.
You never know what breakthrough might be waiting on the other side of simply… showing up.
