Which Way Are You Trending?

Are you:

  • Trending upward—growing, learning, improving your discipline, strengthening your faith, moving closer to your goals and potential?

  • Trending downward—becoming more discouraged, reactive, distracted, or stuck in unhealthy patterns?

  • Flatlining or drifting—just existing without intentional growth or direction?

Trending is a way to assess the pattern of your progress, not just your current position. It invites a mindset of grace and growth rather than guilt or regret.

The key question is: Which way are things moving overall?

When you understand which way you’re trending, you gain clarity on what to keep doing, what to adjust, and how to move forward intentionally.

When it comes to self-improvement, it’s easy to get stuck in extremes. Either we obsess over every detail of our lives—or we avoid the whole evaluation process altogether.


That’s why a better, more balanced question might be:
"Which way would you say you are trending?"

Not: “Are you perfect?”


Not: “Are you where you should be?”


But simply: “Which direction is the arrow of your life pointing?”

This is a powerful question because:

  • It removes shame and adds clarity.

  • It focuses on progress, not perfection.

  • It encourages honesty without self-condemnation.

  • It opens the door to possibility.

  • It reminds you: You can change your direction.

When we don’t stop to ask this, we can slip into “drift mode”—waking up, reacting, surviving, and letting life (and our emotions) dictate everything.

We talk about the weather more than our dreams.

We allow discouragement to lead the way. It’s no wonder so many feel stuck.


But the truth is, you don’t have to stay stuck. You can trend in a new direction—starting today.

So ask yourself:

  • How do I want to trend?

  • Where is the gap between where I am and where I could be?

  • What one action do I know would reverse the trend?

  • What habit or distraction do I need to cut out?

  • What kind of support would help me stay on track?

  • Where did I take my eye off the ball—and what system can I put in place to keep it steady?

The goal isn’t to be perfect—but to live empowered, energized, focused, and free. That’s how God designed you to live.
