The "Energy Drain" No One Talks About...
Mar 12, 2026
What’s Actually Draining Your Energy?
If you’re in mid-life and feeling exhausted, you’ve probably already tried the usual solutions.
Better sleep.
Better diet.
More exercise.
Time management systems.
Morning routines.
Productivity apps.
You’ve listened to the podcasts.
Read the books.
Signed up for the courses.
And yet… the fatigue is still there.
What makes it even harder is the quiet frustration that creeps in: “I’ve already tried everything the gurus say.”
So you start assuming something must be wrong with you.
But what if the real energy drain isn’t the obvious things everyone talks about?
What if it’s something far quieter… and far more subtle?
Let me take you to a strange moment in the Bible.
In Judges 11, a warrior named Jephthah makes what many scholars call one of the most troubling vows in Scripture. Before going into battle, he makes a rash oath to God that if he returns victorious, he will sacrifice whatever first comes out of his house to greet him.
It turns out to be his daughter.
When you read it, your first reaction is usually the same as mine:
What was he thinking?
The vow feels irrational. Extreme. Almost unbelievable.
And yet, what is equally shocking is this:
He kept it.
He didn’t rationalize.
He didn’t renegotiate.
He didn’t pretend he never said it.
His word was his bond.
Now hear me carefully — the Bible is not praising the rash vow. But the story forces us to wrestle with something deeper: the gravity of a person’s word.
Imagine a man whose integrity was so strong that if he said yes, it was yes.
Would you trust him to pay you back?
To lead others?
To show up when he said he would?
Probably.
Jesus later echoes this exact idea in Matthew 5:37:
“Let your ‘Yes’ be yes, and your ‘No,’ no.”
But many of us (me included) today live in a very different place.
We sign up for courses with 30-day guarantees.
We buy books we never finish.
We join memberships we rarely use.
We install apps we abandon.
Our decisions become… loose.
And slowly, quietly, those unfinished commitments begin draining our energy.
They become open loops in the background of our lives.
Like holes in a swimming pool leaking water.
Or rocks quietly piling into our backpack as we hike.
Eventually you see another “shiny opportunity” and think:
Wait… I still haven’t finished the last three things I signed up for.
Confidence drops.
Energy drops.
Trust in yourself drops.
So where do you start?
Start closing the gaps / open loops.
Cancel subscriptions you aren’t using.
Finish the book you started.
Withdraw from commitments you know you won’t honor.
Come back into alignment.
Something surprising happens when you do this.
You start trusting yourself again.
Your decisions carry weight.
And your energy returns.
Because when your yes becomes yes again, life gets lighter.
If this resonates with you, you’re not alone. Many people I coach are carrying these hidden energy drains without realizing it.
Sometimes all it takes is talking it through.
