I see Him...
Apr 30, 2026
There is a phrase I hear from grown men all the time. Usually with a nervous laugh attached to it.
“I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up.”
Everyone chuckles. Someone nods. Another guy says, “Yeah… me too.”
But underneath the humor, there is often something deeper. A quiet ache. A restless searching. A feeling that life has somehow become over-scheduled, over-processed, over-entertained… and under-lived.
Maybe that is why so many people feel exhausted while simultaneously feeling empty.
We consume more content than any generation in history, yet many still carry the haunting feeling: “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”
Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” That sounds beautiful stitched on a pillow. It is much harder to practice in a culture discipled by accumulation.
From the Garden of Eden until now, humanity has wrestled with the same temptation: consume instead of contribute.
More comfort.
More security.
More convenience.
More for me.
And yet Jesus spoke more forcefully about money, compassion, and generosity than almost any other subject. In The Gospel According to Matthew chapter 25, He paints the stunning picture of sheep and goats. The separating line was not church attendance, theology trivia, or outward appearance. It was compassion in motion.
“I was hungry… thirsty… a stranger… naked… sick… in prison…”
And the righteous asked:
“Lord, when did we see you?”
That question wrecks me.
Because apparently many people saw suffering and walked past it.
But some people saw Him.
They saw Jesus in the overlooked.
Jesus in the abandoned.
Jesus in the struggling single mom.
Jesus in the exhausted refugee.
Jesus in the lonely elderly neighbor.
Jesus in the child with no bed but somehow still full of joy.
Psalm 146 says the Lord “upholds the cause of the oppressed,” “gives food to the hungry,” “watches over the foreigner,” and “sustains the fatherless and the widow.” The reign of God is not abstract. It shows up in tangible compassion.
James calls caring for orphans and widows “true religion” while warning us not to be “polluted by the world.” Pollution is subtle. It happens slowly. A polluted heart becomes numb. Distracted. Self-protective. Always busy, but rarely available. Full calendars. Empty compassion.
So how do churches sit week after week unmoved by these passages?
Maybe because it is easier to discuss faith than embody it.
But imagine a church known not merely for services, buildings, and programs — but for seeing people. A church that lived like the Good Samaritan. A church that interrupted convenience to love.
Maybe maturity is not figuring out what you want to do when you grow up.
Maybe it is finally deciding who you want to be.
A sheep.
Someone who sees Him.
